How TikTok's Algorithm Works

TikTok's For You Page (FYP) is powered by a recommendation engine that evaluates every video independently — your follower count doesn't determine reach. A video from a 500-follower account can outperform one from a 5M-follower account if the signals are right.

Key Ranking Signals

TikTok's algorithm weighs these signals, roughly in order of importance:

SignalWeightWhat It Means
Watch timeHighestHow much of the video viewers watch. Completion rate is the single strongest signal.
RewatchesVery HighViewers watching the video more than once. Indicates high-value content.
SharesHighShares to DMs, other apps, or copy-link. Stronger signal than likes.
CommentsHighEspecially longer comments. Reply threads boost the signal further.
LikesMediumPositive signal but weaker than watch time or shares.
Follows from videoMediumWhen viewers follow you directly from the video.
Profile visitsMediumViewers tapping your profile after watching.
Watch Time > Everything
A 60-second video watched to the end is worth significantly more than a 15-second video with the same view count. TikTok rewards retention, not just impressions.

Content Distribution Phases

Every TikTok goes through a multi-stage distribution test:

  1. Small Test (200–500 views): Your video is shown to a small, mixed audience. TikTok measures watch time, completion rate, and early engagement.
  2. Expanded Test (1K–10K views): If the small test performs well, the video is pushed to a larger audience with similar interests.
  3. Broader Distribution (10K–100K+ views): Strong performers get pushed to the wider For You Page. This is where viral growth happens.
  4. Sustained or Decay: Videos either continue gaining momentum or the algorithm stops promoting them. There's no fixed timeline — some videos go viral days or weeks after posting.

What Kills Reach

These factors signal low quality to the algorithm and limit distribution:

  • Low completion rate: Viewers swiping away before the video ends is the strongest negative signal.
  • "Not Interested" taps: When viewers explicitly mark your content as uninteresting.
  • Recycled content: Re-uploading the same video or content clearly copied from another creator.
  • Watermarks from other platforms: Instagram Reels watermarks, CapCut logos, etc.
  • Low-resolution video: Blurry or pixelated content gets suppressed.
  • Engagement bait: "Like for Part 2" or "Follow for more" without delivering value.
  • Violating Community Guidelines: Even borderline violations can shadow-reduce reach.

Hashtags & Sounds

Hashtags and sounds play a supporting role in distribution:

  • Hashtags help categorize your content for the initial test audience. Use 3–5 specific hashtags over generic ones like #fyp or #viral.
  • Trending sounds can boost initial distribution because TikTok actively pushes content using them — but only if the content is also strong.
  • Original audio works well when you're building a personal brand. It won't get the trending-sound boost but avoids competing with thousands of other videos using the same sound.
  • Niche hashtags (e.g., #skincarereviews vs #beauty) reach a more targeted audience, which often leads to better engagement signals.
Algorithm Updates
TikTok regularly adjusts its ranking weights. The fundamentals (watch time, completion, shares) have remained consistent, but the relative weight of newer signals like search behavior and "Add to Favorites" continues to evolve.
