How Instagram's Algorithm Works

Instagram doesn't have one algorithm — it uses separate ranking systems for Feed, Stories, Explore, and Reels. Each surface prioritizes different signals and serves different purposes.

Reels Ranking

Reels are Instagram's primary discovery surface and the most relevant for campaign content. The Reels algorithm prioritizes:

SignalWeightWhat It Means
Watch timeHighestHow long viewers watch. Completion rate and rewatches are the top signals.
Shares to DMsVery HighThe strongest engagement signal for Reels. Instagram heavily weights private shares.
SavesHighViewers bookmarking the Reel. Indicates high-value, reference-worthy content.
LikesMediumPositive signal but less impactful than shares or saves.
CommentsMediumMeaningful comments carry more weight than emoji-only reactions.
Audio usageMediumUsing trending audio can boost initial distribution.
Shares > Saves > Likes
Instagram's head of product has publicly confirmed that sends (DM shares) are the most valued engagement signal for Reels distribution. Create content people want to share with friends.

Feed vs Explore vs Reels Tab

Each surface ranks content differently:

SurfaceWho Sees ItPrimary Signals
FeedYour followersRelationship history, post recency, engagement with your past content
ExploreNon-followers discovering youContent similarity to viewer's interests, engagement velocity, content freshness
Reels TabPrimarily non-followersEntertainment value, watch time, audio trends, shareability

For campaign content, the Reels tab is where most discovery happens. Optimize for entertainment value and shareability over follower engagement.

What Kills Reach

Instagram actively suppresses content with these characteristics:

  • Watermarks from other platforms: TikTok logos or any third-party watermarks dramatically reduce Reels distribution.
  • Low-resolution content: Anything below 720p or visibly compressed.
  • Text-heavy thumbnails: Cover images that are mostly text get deprioritized.
  • Engagement bait: "Tag 3 friends" or "Double tap if you agree" without substance.
  • Recycled content: Reposting the same Reel or content that's already on the platform.
  • Political or sensitive content: Instagram reduces the reach of content it classifies as borderline.
  • Too many hashtags: Using 20+ hashtags can look spammy. Stick to 3–8 relevant ones.

Hashtags, Audio & Location Tags

  • Hashtags: Use 3–8 specific, relevant hashtags. Mix niche hashtags with moderately popular ones. Avoid banned or spammy hashtags.
  • Trending audio: Using trending Reels audio gives a distribution boost. Check the Reels audio page — a small upward arrow indicates a trending track.
  • Original audio: Works well for talking-head content and tutorials. Won't get the trending boost but avoids competition.
  • Location tags: Boost discovery for local or regional audiences. Especially useful for location-specific campaigns.

Algorithm Updates
Instagram frequently adjusts its ranking. In recent updates, Instagram has increased the weight of original content and smaller creators in Reels distribution, making it more competitive with TikTok's creator-friendly algorithm.
